Reviewing D’banj’s 2 new singles & his return to form

Reviewing D’banj’s 2 new singles & his return to form.

2018 has been a year of comebacks. Take a look at Duncan Mighty who fizzled out of the industry a long time ago now making a comeback. He’s since gone on to drop a number of songs and featured on some of the trending songs of 2018.

Another artiste that’s had a great 2018 music-wise is D’Banj. While 2018 may have brought mixed feelings following the loss of his son to a pool accident earlier this year, the talented artiste has shaken off the pain and trudged on.

When Mo’Hits Records, a label jointly owned by D’Banj and Don Jazzy split up, many Nigerians and indeed music enthusiasts were hurt. No one expected the duo to ever split up especially seeing as they had just signed up with Kanye West‘s G.O.OD Music. Everything was going fine, we all hoped.

But it turned out that while D’Banj wanted them to go international and try their luck in the US, Don Jazzy felt that the African music scene was big enough for them to thrive and make a name. To their credit, when they split up, it wasn’t messy from their side. Only other artistes took sides.

Nearly one decade after that split and D’Banj‘s decision to start DB Records and ply his trade in the US, it would appear as if Don Jazzy was right as D’Banj is back home to his roots and warming his way back into the hearts of music enthusiasts on the continent.

Aside from “Oliver Twist” that went viral and won accolades internationally, since D’Banj left, he has not enjoyed the same level of influence that he enjoyed when he did music on the continent. For an artiste that once ruled the airwaves and is one of the living legends in a class with 2Face and the Psqaure brothers, that must have hurt.

Well, he is back on the continent doing music and rediscovering his charm. He’s released a number of songs but the last two songs he released are the true proofs that the koko master is back and better.

There was the collaboration with Mavin Records queen, Tiwa Savage on “Shake It” earlier this month and another collaboration with South African rapper, Cassper Nyovest on “Something4Something”.

Those two songs show D’Banj in his natural element. He’s a performer, a tease, an artiste that celebrates the flashy and sends the female population into ecstasy with his sweet words and sleek moves and he looks like he has rediscovered that magic with the two recent songs.

“Shake It” had him admiring a female backside and asking her to shake it. Kind of reminds you of the Mo’Hits days when “Booty Call” ran the show.

How about “Something4Something”, the wording and lines remind you of the “Pere” and “Mr Endowed” years when he teased fans relentlessly and cemented his place in the industry.

Well, while Duncan Mighty appeared to be the comeback person of the year, D’Banj with the last two songs may just be the dark horse that will bring this home and overtake Duncan Mighty as the comeback man of the year. We know he’s still got it and judging by the last two songs, he’s ready to unleash it and reclaim his place in the industry.
