NaijaTurnUp’s Top 10 Naija Songs of February 2018
The month of February, as expected, gave us some insanely amazing hits from some of our favourite artistes who are definitely still neck deep in the business of cooking up musical masterpieces for our pleasure.
We all were so thrilled by such an abundance of really impressive firecrackers all through the month that coming up with this top 10 was next to impossible, seeing as there are very limited slots on a list as this.
So, even though they didn’t make the cut, big ups to songs such as “Gucci Gang” by D’Prince featuring Davido and Don Jazzy, “Somebody Baby” and “My Way” by the Okoye twins Rudeboy and Mr P respectively, “Whine For Daddy” by Orezi featuring Tekno and “Shoulda” by D’banj for making our February.
On that note, based largely on production quality, lyrical content and – of course – the frequency with which they’ve been streamed or learn moreed, we’re super pleased to present to you NaijaTurnUp’s top 10 songs of February 2018.
10. Tekno – Anyhow ft. OG, Flimzy & Selebobo
We’re happy to start off our countdown with the recent scorcher dubbed “Anyhow” from self acclaimed Slim Daddy, Tekno Miles on which he features OG, Flimzy & Selebobo.
If you somehow have managed not to get your groove on to this one yet, we wonder what you’re waiting for. The joint is as fiery as it gets, and the sizzling music video directed by David Anthony is just befitting.
9. Johnny Drille – Awa Love
When Mavin Records signed alternative singer Johnny Drille dropped “Awa Love”, literally everyone who heard the song fell in love at first listen.
Once again, Johnny Drille – who has proven time and again that he knows his onions when it comes to making good music – blesses us with his rich, soulful vocals as he creates melodies that easily resonate with everyone regardless of their musical inclinations.
8. Skales – Senrere ft. D’banj
Once we heard that the talented singer and rapper Skales had linked up with the iconic Kokomaster himself to cook up a banger, we had no doubts in our minds that it would be exactly that.
“Senrere” brings us everything we’ve come to love about Skales and D’banj on one track, and leaves us desperately yearning for more after every listen.
7. Dr SID – Open and Close
Brilliantly produced by both Altims and Mavin Records head honcho himself, Don Jazzy, Dr SID threw us all into a frenzy when he commissioned “Open and Close” on the very first day of the month.
As you probably already know, the song is such an infectious scorcher and has kept virtually everyone who has heard it trying out all sorts of dance moves to the dope vibe.
6. Kcee – Burn ft. Sarkodie
Five Star Music frontman Kcee enlists the lyrical genius of one of Africa’s greatest rappers alive on this love jam titled “Burn”, and the track is literally on fire. Check out the scorching music video if you don’t understand what we mean.
Produced by the talented Blaq Jerzee, the joint reminds us yet again just why Kcee’s musical ability has long come to be so appreciated. Of course, Sarkodie does his magic on “Burn” as well, making the banging joint the total package.
5. DJ Spinall – Nowo ft. Wizkid
Definitely one of our favourite songs of February, “Nowo” has continued to rock our airwaves and feature prominently on our favourite DJs playlists, and we can’t pretend not to understand why.
What else does one expect when the critically-acclaimed DJ Spinall links up with Starboy himself, Wizkid, to cook up a joint with a music producer of Killertunes’ calibre on production decks?
4. Phyno – Isi Ego
If you’re already familiar (how can’t you be) with the reputation that indigenous Nigerian rapper Phyno has earned himself on account of the numerous firecrackers he has released as a recording artiste, then there’s no need saying too much about this one.
The Penthauze Records front man works his magic yet again on this firecracker titled “Isi Ego” which was ably produced by Iam Beats. As usual, Phyno goes hard on this one and blows us to bits.
3. Adekunle Gold – Ire
What can we say? Adekunle Gold simply has the Midas touch. In an industry where making commercial music is obviously the easiest way to hit it big, the serial hit maker has stuck to making his unique breed of music, which is largely classified as Urban Highlife.
His latest masterpiece “Ire” (which translates to goodness in English) was produced by the brilliant Seyikeyz is definitely one of the most compelling songs we’ve listened to recently – a musical masterpiece by every standard.
2. Starboy – Soco ft. Wizkid, Ceeza Milli, Spotless & Terri
With the world of anticipation that surrounded this one, it wasn’t at all in doubt that “Soco” was going to be an infinitely massive score upon its release, and so it was.
Produced by Northboi, “Soco” is the very definition of the ultimate banger. Alongside Ceeza Milli, Spotless and Terri, Starboy boss Wizkid brings the heat, delivers the goods as expected and blesses us, yet again, with his musical genius.
1. Davido – Flora My Flawa
Taking up our top spot for the month of February is Davido’s light-hearted love jam “Flora My Flawa” which dropped unexpectedly just before Valentine’s day along with a scintillating music video.
The song was produced DMW’s in-house producer Fresh who knocks it out of the park as usual. Of course, Davido brings it bit time with his witty lines which play a major part in making the song the phenomenon that it undoubtedly is.
The stellar music video for “Flora My Flawa” was directed by the prolific magic maker Clarence Peters, features all the DMW boys alongside a few familiar faces, and is such a delight to watch over and over again.
