5 Reasons a Don Jazzy/D’Banj Reunion Will Do the Nigerian Music Industry a World of Good
Davido’s end of 2017 30 Billion World Tour Lagos Finale was significant for a number of reasons. Apart from allegedly raking in half a billion naira, the show featured a number of stellar appearances and performances.
Most notable among these appearances was the reunion of the members of the now defunct Mo’Hits Crew for a power-packed performance half a decade after the critically acclaimed group split up and went their separate ways.
Home to Wande Coal, Dr SID, D’Prince and K-Switch while it existed as a record label, Mo’Hits Records, founded in 2004, was owned by D’banj and Don Jazzy. Whereas Don Jazzy was the CEO/President of the label, D’banj was the Co-Owner.
As a pair, D’banj and Don Jazzy virtually dominated the Nigerian music scene towards the end of the last decade with mega smash hits such as “Fall in Love”, “Why Me” and “Igwe”.
Since the duo parted ways in 2012, Don Jazzy has gone ahead to establish the mega successful Mavin Records to which Dr SID, D’Prince, Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Di’Ja, Korede Bello, Johnny Drille, DNA and Poe are signed.
D’banj himself – who now also owns his own record label, DB Records – took the world by storm with “Oliver Twist” right after the split, and has remained an intricate part of the Nigerian music scene with hits such as “Emergency” and “It’s Not a Lie”.
Regardless of the fact the both artistes have gone on attain significant success on their different paths, there’s no doubt that a reunion between Don Jazzy and D’banj will benefit the Nigerian music industry immensely, and these are the top 5 reasons why we think so.
1. Don Jazzy and D’banj are still better together
Although both Don Jazzy and D’banj have remained big shots on the Nigerian music scene since their split, D’banj, quite frankly, hasn’t been the massive superstar he was while partnered with Don Jazzy.
The hit-maker who decimated pre-existing records by winning the coveted MTV EMA Best African Act award twice – once while still with Don Jazzy, and the second month’s after their split – hasn’t been able to replicate the levels of success he recorded while with Don Jazzy.
Although doing considerably better than D’banj right now with the successes that his record label’s artistes have earned these past few years, the truth remains that Don Jazzy has nobody signed to Mavin Records that’s as big a superstar as D’banj was when the duo worked together.
It’s therefore pretty obvious that – just like bread and butter – D’banj and Don Jazzy are better together.
2. The pair might have some unfinished business between them.
Anybody who understands how the music industry operates knows the that it can take a significant amount of time for records to be conceived, recorded, put together and released. So, for instance, a song or an album that gets released today might have been in the works for the past couple of years or even more.
Considering how abrupt their surprising split was, the odds are that Don Jazzy and D’banj were working on a number of projects that never got to see the light of day. Wouldn’t it just be epic to have those songs brought up to speed, finished up and released in today’s music atmosphere?
3. Promising artistes could learn a thing or two from the duo
Don Jazzy and D’banj share an unbelievable amount of industry experience and knowledge between them, having been heavyweights for such a long time, and practically breaking through international frontiers long before their contemporaries.
It is therefore expected that a reunion of the two veterans would provide promising artistes who have what it takes to shine on the global stage with a vast ocean of knowledge that they can readily tap from to advance their careers.
4. Their reunion could further inspire our favourite artistes
One of the best things a D’banj/Don Jazzy reunion would do for the Nigerian music industry is that it would completely change the industry’s dynamics, making the competition for the top spot stiffer and consequently inspiring the artistes who are currently on top of their game to do even better.
Furthermore, some of our favourite artistes who have long stopped making music since splitting up would definitely be inspired to consider getting back together on the music scene and making long overdue comebacks.
5. There’s no such thing as too much good music
Even if not for any other reason, D’banj and Don Jazzy getting back together would be such great news for the Nigerian music industry because it would definitely mean we’ll be treated to much more fantastic music than we presently are.
