What must have been to him then a quiet harmless observation – the statement that internet fraud is not criminal – has exploded into a big ball of trouble for Nigerian rapper Naira Marley.

Back then Naira Marley had observed: “If u know about slavery u go know say yahoo no b crime..” many, including members of Naira Marley’s constituency, the music industry, were puzzled by the statement, with singer Simi even openly ostracizing him.

Rapper Ruggedman had even intervened, trying to school Naira Marley on the necessity of making a distinction between slavery and internet crime, and not to use one to justify the other.

In the cacophony of the whole controversy, Naira Marley had teamed up with Zlatan and the duo had released a track titled “Am I a Yahoo Boy.” It was a way to clear the air about the whole controversy and even clear his name.

But the track did not impress many, least of all Nigeria’s economic crime investigation body, the EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission), which has apparently been observing from the sides.

On Friday 10 My, jarred by the observation that internt fraud is not criminal, the EFCC had finally swung into action, arresting Naira Marley and Zlatan at Zlatan’s house in Lekki.

After a brief silence, the EFCC had publicly admitted arresting the two singers as well as three others (Tiamiu Abdulrahman Kayode, Adewunmi Adeyanju Moses and Abubakar Musa.). It also paraded them in camera.
