Davido wins BET Award For Best International Act

Davido accepts Best International Act onstage at the 2018 BET Awards at Microsoft Theater on June 24, 2018 in Los Angeles.

Nigerian pop icon, Davido has emerged winner in the Best International Act category on Sunday at the BET Awards held at Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

The BET Awards, established by Black Entertainment Television is held to recognize the best acts in African American culture, as well as maintaining an international category for black music from outside the United States.

The excited singer thanked his Nigerian fans and acknowledged that Africa as a continent “has been so blessed”.

While making his acceptance speech, the “FALL” hitmaker urged greater collaborations between US and African musicians, and called out names like J.Cole and Migos.

“I’m telling you guys — come to Africa, eat the food, wear the clothes,” he told the audience consisting of A-list African American stars.

To secure the award, the “Assurance” crooner beat fellow nominees, British rappers Stormzy, J Hus and Stefflon Don, French rappers Booba and Niska and the French-Congolese soul singer Dadju.

He also beat popular South African hip-hop producer Cassper Nyovest and South African House music innovators Distruction Boyz, Kinshasa-born singer and guitarist Fally Ipupa and Nigerian colleague and Afro-pop queen, Tiwa Savage.

Davido’s win signifies the first time any Nigerian will receive the BET award on the main stage, with hundreds of celebrity audience cheering on.

The singer also expressed his condolences to Nigeria’s Kokomaster, D’banj, whose son died on Sunday.
