Headies is a Yoruba award, no Igbo artiste performed or won – OAP Akonuche

The reactions to the 12th Headies held last Saturday won’t stop pouring in. From controversies to very heated debates, the 12th Headies has refused to stop trending. We weren’t kidding when we said this year’s Headies may just be the most controversial yet.

We’ve had Comedian Ebiye make a distasteful comment about Afrosoul queen, Aramide that he was forced to apologise over. We’ve had fans call out the organisers over the Tiwa Savage vs Yemi Alade debacle and now, the latest controversy is coming all the way from eastern Nigerian state of Anambra.

MC Akonuche of Blaze FM, Anambra has lent his voice to the debates and controversies when through his Instagram account, he described the 12th Headies as a Yoruba award.

Explaining his stand, the OAP blamed it on influential people from eastern Nigeria who never seem to support entertainment and on recognised artists from the east who never try to support the upcoming ones.

Lamenting the lack of representation of Igbo artists at the awards, the OAP said from the red carpet, to performances to awards, Igbo artists did not get what they deserved on the night, even as he implied that Runtown’s “Mad Over You” should have won over Davido’s “FIA”.

In his words:

Look at d #12thheadies last nit..from d red carpet, no Igbo anchor, no Igbo presented an award, except Ebuka who of course is a Yoruba personality, no Igbo artist performed n no Igbo artist won an award in all categories. Even SONG OF D YEAR DAT was supposed to go to MAD OVER U BY @runtown was given to a Yoruba Artist.. I work on d radio n I call tell u DAT MAD OVER U received high air play from December 2016 wen it dropped till mid 2017 wen IF by DAVIDO came out..”

As more controversies continue to emerge, it will be interesting to hear what the organisers have to say for themselves as a lot is riding on this.
