“Most New Generation Record Labels are Founded by Yahoo Boys,” D’banj Asserts

Foremost Nigerian Afropop sensation D’banj has just recently dropped a bombshell, stating that the majority of new generation record labels in the country are founded by fraudsters.

Dbanj, who proudly owns his own record label, DB records, made this assertion in Lagos at the 2018 Social Media Week where he spoke on the topic: “Changing The Game: Artistes As Leaders.”

Further identifying the lack of capacity among Nigerian artistes a major setback in the Nigerian music industry, D’banj encouraged upcoming artistes to work hard at building their brands with diligence and consistency.

These were the superstar’s words:

“Most of the new generation record labels are founded by Yahoo boys. You must understand first, why are you coming into music.

“Nigerian artistes need a lot of capacity building. It is only in Nigeria that the owner of a record label doesn’t know anything about music.”

The audience must have listened to the music mogul with rapt attention as D’banj, who has been an intricate part of the mainstream Nigerian music industry for well over a decade, has garnered such a wealth of industry experience.

The artiste practically took over the Nigerian music scene way back in 2004 with his erstwhile partner, Don Jazzy, on the Mo’Hits records platform.

The unstoppable pair however went their separate ways in 2012 due to irreconcilable differences, but have managed to remain in good terms and keep their solo music careers thriving ever since.

The serial hit-maker who harped on the need for artistes to continually evolve explained that the fear of poverty motivated him to pursue a career in music.

“Just like any product, you must always evolve. The fear of being poor made me think outside the box. This is one of the factors that drove me into music.”

With the current rate at which music record labels are springing up all across the country, it’s really hard not to agree with the Kokomaster on this one.
