In commemoration of the Hindi Gandhi Jayanti festival, Tanzanian songstress Vanessa Mdee covers the Hindi classic “Vaishnav Jan To”.
The Gandhi Jayanti is a national festival celebrated in India every October 2, to mark the birth anniversary of Indian activist Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, who was born on October 2, 1869. This year was no different has Hindus everywhere celebrated this national hero.
The Tanzanian diva, who is behind hit songs like “Juu”, “Kisela”, “Shadee”, “Never Ever”, “Bounce” and with a host of other dope guest appearances to her name decides to honour the tradition by covering one of the most popular songs in the Hindi tradition.
The “Vaishnava Jana To” was written in 15th century by the poet Narsinh Mehta. It was included in Mahatma Ghandi’s daily pray which makes it all the more befitting as Vanessa Mdee adds her colourful voice to celebrate a selfless leader as Gandhi.
