“Music chose me, I didn’t choose it.” Not too long ago, those were the words of 26 year old Hausa Hip-Hop frontrunner, Buba Barnabas Luka, who simply goes by ClassiQ.
To his teeming fans’ delight, the Arewa Mafia who has made clear that his primary intention is to convince his listeners that there’s much more to Hausa Hip-Hop than meets the eye – kicks off his year with an absolute bang, as he enlists Nigerian ace Hip-Hop maestro, M.I Abaga, on his latest offering.
Widely regarded as the flag bearer for Hausa Hip-Hop, ClassiQ, who began making music at barely 16, has earned himself a reputation for his deadly, witty punchlines which he delivers expertly in a variety of languages – Hausa, English, and good old Nigerian pidgin.
His latest banger, ‘Gudu’ (which literally means ‘run’) was mixed and mastered by the uber-talented sound engineer, G-plus Chang, and is undoubtedly the perfect blend of Hip-Hop culture with rich, authentic Hausa goodness.
As if listening to ClassiQ effortlessly drop bar after bar in Hausa language, the ‘Undisputed’ self-proclaimed African number 1 rapper also comes through – rather surprisingly – with bars in Hausa! What could be better?
We’re absolutely blown away by ‘Gudu’, especially considering the concerns M.I has raised in recent times about how Nigerian Hip-Hop music can do better. This is no doubt a step in the direction of progress, and it’s great to see M.I be a part of it.
