If you’ve seen the critically-acclaimed biographical sports drama film, Queen of Katwe, the odds are that you would remember the character, Shakira, at least vaguely.
You however might be stunned to realise that Sheebah Karungi, the Ugandan recording artiste who was relatively unknown to Nigerians before her collaboration with Mavin superstars, Korede Bello and Di’Ja on the remix of her chart-topping single, “Nipe Yote,” was the actress who portrayed the character in the Walt Disney Movie.
The multi-talented recording artiste, dancer and actress has once again released another Nigerian collaboration, this time featuring the uber-talented “Mad Over You” crooner, Runtown. She titles this single of hers “Weekend.”
Sheebah Karungi’s father is Rwandan, while her mother is from the Ankole Tribe in Uganda. As a youngster, Sheebah joined The Obsessions – a front line singing group in Kampala at the time – in 2006. She however said goodbye to the group after four years to pursue a solo career.
The songstress, who has also collaborated with Nigerian singing sensation, Solidstar, on the remix of her song, “Nkwatako.” Musically, she rose to prominence after the release of her debut project, “Ice Cream,” project – a 5-track EP which recorded remarkable commercial success and ultimately earned her the Best Female Artist title back-to-back at the HiPipo Music Awards in 2014 and 2015.
“Weekend” is a feel-good Afropop song that easily highlights the musical genius of both the Ugandan songstress, with her characteristic fierce and first vocals, and the Gallardo superstar, who seems to provide the perfect icing on a well-baked cake. The track is no doubt a great score for both artistes, and is sure to get you vibing… even on your moodiest day.
