Over the years, many dance steps have evolved; all introduced by various artists. Some of these dance steps include Jogodo, Galala, Yahoozee, Kukere, Shoki, among many others.
In 2017, a new dance move rode over the Nigerian music scene like a storm courtesy of popular Nigeria rap superstar Olamide popularly known as Badoo Sneh.
Shaku Shaku was the dance step. The street dance mimics the steps of a drunkard or someone who has smoked copious amounts of weed. It is done by stretching out the arm and crossing them over each other in front with the legs widened out and launching into a graceful half-galloping.
Other types of dance steps performed in the dance are more of freestyle. In fact, the dance has even been tagged as the Nigerian Gangnam style.
While Olamide gets credit for the dance, the truth is that he is not the inventor of the dance. However, the “Eni Duro” hitmaker played a critical role in making the dance the current craze in the country, as well as seamlessly incorporating it into the mainstream media.
Truthfully, the dance originated in the streets. According to DJ Real, Shaku Shaku name is for street guys, and the dance was named after their particular style of dances when they are drunk or have smoked weed to the point of being incoherent.
The DJ thinks the origination of the dance step can be traced to Agege area in Lagos state.
YBNL boss, Olamide who has a penchant for incorporating street flavours and culture into his songs used Shaku Shaku dancers in the video of his hit song “Wo”.
Afterwards, the dance style began to gain attention. But the main breakthrough of Shaku Shaku came after the fourth edition of his annual Olamide Live in Concert (OLIC 4) show.
Instead of holding the concert at the popular Eko Hotel convention centre, he held the show on the mainland at the Teslim Balogun Stadium. The concert displayed some of the best street records of 2017 by artists like Dj Real, Slimcase, and DJ Enimoney with the dance showcased in front of more than ten thousand people.
By the end of 2017, everyone was crazy about Shaku Shaku. Celebrities were not left out – popular artists like Davido, DJ Cuppy, Tiwa Savage, and Wizkid were seen imitating the dance steps.
From the lively streets of Agege to the social media, the ‘Shaku Shaku’ dance is at the forefront of Nigerian music in 2018.
