C.Ronaldo: Again, Olamide Fails to Fly Without Young John

Olamide – C Ronaldo

There’s no disputing the fact that Olamide Baddo is the quintessential serial hit-maker. The YBNL Boss, who is notorious for dropping mega scorchers like it’s nothing particularly took 2018 by the balls when he commissioned the controversial Young John produced “Science Student” at the beginning of the year.

Three whole months and some after, “Science Student” is still the song virtually everyone quickly remembers when they think about Olamide’s efforts this year, especially considering the fact that the track got an insane visual treatment from the sensational Unlimited L.A.

As wonderful as this must be for Olamide and his team, one can’t help but notice that the three other songs which the rapper has released subsequently have all failed to measure up to the success that “Science Student” has so easily recorded.

First was his joint “Sheevita Juice” with Skepta which was produced by BBanks (who co-produced “Science Student” alongside Young John).

Hot on the heels of that was the laid-back “Omo Ologo” produced by S’Bling which was commissioned barely a week later.

Both songs were impressive scores by many standards, and it would be unfair for anyone to say that neither Olamide nor the producers who put the songs together didn’t come to the table with their best.

The fact however remains that none of these songs came anywhere close to measuring up with “Science Student”.

Aside from his notable features on songs such as Efe’s “Warri”, Ric Hassani’s “Believe”, D’Tunes’ “Titilailai” and Lyta’s “Time”, the uncrowned King of the Streets came through – just a couple of weeks ago – with yet another number, this one titled “C.Ronaldo”, and it has still underperformed.

“C.Ronaldo” was produced by the veteran music producer ID Cabasa, who has long been mentioned as one of the people who were particularly instrumental to Olamide’s rise to prominence.

Be that as it may, “C.Ronaldo” will unfortunately not be the song that takes over from “Science Student” as – almost three whole weeks after its release – the track is yet to gain that level of traction.

In many people’s opinion, the only reason each of these subsequent releases by Olamide has failed to fly is because they weren’t produced by Young John.

This opinion is prevalent not necessarily because Young John is the hottest music producer in Nigeria (which, in our opinion, he is) but because none of these other producers seem to understand the YBNL Generalissimo’s musical needs like Young John does.

Olamide and Young John seem to have found the right rhythm together, discovered the perfect formula for cooking up monster scorchers, and have been doing just that as far back as we can recall.

From “Story For The Gods” to “Bobo” to “Konkonbility” to “Wo!!” and virtually all the other impressive songs on Olamide’s 2017 “Lagos Nawa!” album, Young John has been responsible.

It’s therefore really no surprise that the gifted music producer’s absence on an Olamide song will greatly be felt by ardent lovers of Baddo’s music who have become well acquainted with that unmistakable Young John flavour.
